ภาพยนตร์เรื่องล่าสุดที่คว้ารางวัลHorizon Awards จากเทศกาลภาพยนตร์เวนิซ หนังเล่าเรื่องของโสเภณีสาวนางหนึ่งที่เดินทางมาขายตัวในเมืองเล็กๆ เธอมาถึงพร้อมๆกับแม่ชีที่มารับบริจาคเงินช่วยผู้ยากไร้   ระหว่างนั้นเธอพบกับชายหนุ่มที่อ้างตัวว่าเป็นแมงดา และประกอบกิจการพาคนมาดูเซกส์โชว์   ซึ่งการณ์กลายเป็นว่าทั้งสามคนคือกลุ่มเพื่อนที่พยายามจะก้าวข้ามอดีตอันเจ็บปวดเมื่อครั้งสมัยที่พวกเขาเคยเป็นนักปฏิวัติหัวก้าวหน้า และสูญเสียเพื่อน คนรักไปอย่างไม่รู้สาเหตุ  ซึ่งพวกเขาพยายามจะก้าวข้ามเรื่องนี้โดยการทดลองรับบทเป็นคนอื่น ชีวิตอื่นไปเรื่อยๆ ปละหน แต่ดูเหมือนยิ่งไปยิ่งไกล และไม่มีใครสามารถลบบาปผิดติดตัวได้ หากยิ่งไปยิ่งจมดิ่งลงในห้วงแห่งความทุกข์ระทม

Melancholia was last year's winner of the Venice International Film Festival's Horizon Awards. A prostitute turns up in a small town at the same time as a nun who has come to collect charitable donations. She meets a man who seems to be a pimp staging sex shows for customers. As the film unfolds we learn that all three had known each other previously, when they had been progressive revolutionaries, and all have suffered the sudden disappearance of friends and loved ones. To try to overcome the trauma of their loss they assume the identity of others, but the more they turn themselves into someone else the deeper they sink into melancholy.

ภาพยนตร์ที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจเริ่มต้นจากการออกไปถ่ายฟุตเตจในเมือง Bicol เมืองที่ถูกพายุใต้ฝุ่นที่รุนแรงที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ฟิลิปปินส์ถล่มจนหายไปทั้งเมือง เริ่มจากการเป็นภาพบันทึก ดิอาซค่อยๆเสริมเติมเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับ กวีชาวฟิลิปปินส์ ผู้ซึ่งหลังจากไปอยู่ยุโรปตะวันออกหลายปีก็ถูกเรียกตัวกลับมายังหมู่บ้านที่เป็นบ้านเกิด  และค้นพบอย่างสะพรึงขวัญว่าทั้งชุมชนของเขานั้นบัดนี้ถูกฝังอยู่ใต้หล่มโคลนและซากปรักหักพัง   จากนั้นเขาเริ่มออกเร่ร่อนไปอย่างไร้จุดหมายท่ามกลางสภาพของเมืองที่เป็นเพียงเศษซาก  ได้พบกับเพื่อนเก่าที่สติไม่ดี พบกับคนรัก และสมาชิกครอบครัวที่ต่างก็ซัดเซพเนจรไปท่ามกลางขอบเหวแห่งความล่มสลาย และเริ่มสานสัมพันธ์กับผู้คนที่เขาเคยหลงลืมไปอีกครั้ง

The inspiration for this film was the footage Diaz shot of the town Bicol, which was destroyed by the worst typhoon the Philippines had ever experienced. Diaz built upon this footage a story of a Filipino poet called back to the village of his birthplace having spent long years in Eastern Europe. To his terror he discovers only ruins there - the whole town has been buried by a massive landslide. The poet begins his aimless wandering amidst the debris, meeting an old friend who has lost his mind, then his old lover, and members of his family, who are each adrift in this devastated landscape. In his quest the poet restores the relationship with the people he had left behind

Diaz's magnificent epic took 11 years to complete, and tells of the suffering of two Filipino peasant families connected through the orphan Raynaldo. As a baby Raynaldo was rescued from a Manila street by a mad woman, and grew up in a family accused of having madness in the blood. Under Martial Law the family becomes separated: the grandmother and her granddaughters survive as farm labourers, Kadyo the head of the family is jailed indefinitely, and Raynaldo ends up with the other family whose mother is going blind. To try to raise the funds to cure her, the father and his sons abandon farming to work illegally in a goldmine controlled by gangsters. The story of the toil of Filipinos, told over decades, is cut with footage of historical events - demonstrations, the military's crackdown of protestors, and the assassination of Ninoy Aquino. Painful to watch, and astonishing, this is one of cinema's greatest epics of the wretched of the earth

นีคือครึ่งแรกของหนังที่ว่ากันว่าจะมีสามภาคโดยครึ่งที่ความยาว 9 ชั่วโมงเรื่องนี้เล่าเรื่องของนายช่างหนุ่ม ที่ตั้งแต่ช่วงต้นเรื่องได้ตัดสินใจแยกออกจากกลุ่มกองเกวียนของพ่อค้าวานิชซึ่งเขาโดยสารมาด้วย  ระหว่างเดินทางลำพังเจาประสบเข้ากับพายุเฮอร์ริเคนที่ทำให้ข้าวของทั้งหมด กระทั่งวัวเทียมเกวียนของเขาหายสาบสูญไป หากเขายังออกเดินเร่ร่อนต่อไป และได้พบกับผู้คนมากหน้าหลายตา ทั้งกลุ่มเด็กขี้ยาที่วางแผนจะข่มขืนผู้หญิง  และแม้เขาพยายามจะบอกแผนการส่วนบุคคลของเขาให้คนอื่นรับรู้แต่ก็ไม่มีใครรับฟัง เขาถึงขั้นกับบนบานกับพราเจ้าว่าเขาจะเดินทางสี่สิบวันโดยไม่กินอาหาร แลกกับการที่เด็กสาวจะไม่ถูกทำร้าย

The first part of an intended trilogy, this 9-hour film follows the quest of the eponymous crafts merchant. Heremias decides to separate from the group he had been travelling with, and having left them is caught in a typhoon. The morning after he finds his ox and cart had been taken, but nevertheless continues with his journey. He meets an assortment of people including a group of drug addicts who are plotting to rape a girl. He tries to warn others what is about to happen but no one takes any notice and so Heremias resorts to an exchange with God: he will continue on his quest for 40 days without food in return for the safety of the girl.
